Company Background

TMD Technologies Limited (TMD) is among the world’s leading manufacturers of microwave tubes, high voltage power supplies, and transmitters for Radar, EW, Communications, EMC RF testing, and other Laboratory applications.

TMD can trace its roots back to the early 1940’s, when the microwave tube research division of EMI Electronics was established to develop high power klystrons, for use in the first airborne radars being developed during the second world war.

In 1969 the company was formed into a joint venture with Varian (now CPI), which ran for 20 years. In 1989 the company became a wholly owned subsidiary of THORN EMI Electronics, and commenced development of switched mode power supplies and transmitters for radar & EW applications.

In 1995 THORN EMI sold the company to a "Management Buy Out" team, led by the Managing Director, and as TMD Technologies this is now a wholly owned, fully independent private UK company.

TMD has continued to invest in research and development of new products and technologies, and together with significant investment from our customers has resulted in a wide range of leading edge products, which are now being sold throughout the western world.

Quality

TMD Technologies is regularly audited against, and approved to the rigorous quality standard BS EN ISO9001:2000.

TMD’s quality philosophy is to adopt and introduce best practice – as developed and taught by the leading experts in the field of quality. The company seeks to instil quality awareness, together with a process of continuous improvement in all parts, and at all levels of the organisation.

The following are some of the key aspects:

• The process of product design and development follows a format to monitor progress, through design reviews, and strict adherence to a well proven procedure, to ensure the product will achieve optimum performance and reliability.
• All ruggedised products are subjected to a rigorous application of ESS (Environmental Stress Screening) and HALT (Highly Accelerated Life Testing) to expose any design or component weaknesses.
• Use of "5S" Initiatives taken from the Japanese approach to quality - (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardise and Sustain),
• Inspection and quality control during production and test.
• Photoflow quality control systems to reduce ambiguity and improve consistency.
• Systematic cause & effect failure analysis to enable problems to be solved quickly.
• Supplier improvement initiatives and ship to stock policies.
• A continual product and process improvement policy using customer feedback and live, regularly updated quality databases.
